EXPLORE THE HISTORY
The Rock HouseThe story of this unique building is a marvelous tale.... it was built in 1941 by Johnny Cardoza, an Italian rock hound. It served as the reception area and lobby for the Rockwood Motel. Article at right reads:
"Petrified wood, we are told, took millions of years before it became rock solid and termite-proof. So it isn't surprising that the Rock-Wood Motel on the northern edge of Klamath Falls, Oregon-built from these fossils as a labor of love by a folk artist over 50 years ago-has lasted longer than the highway on which it was built. Old Highway 97 has been totally eclipsed by the new bypass, denying most tourists the chance to behold or maybe even spend a night in this architectural tour de force." |
